Orticola Flower Show

Orticola Flower Show

The Orticola Milan’s Flower Show was created for Milan in 1996. Ever since it began, Orticola has continued to be the most important Italian show for national and international specialised nurseries. Not only this, it has also dedicated its proceeds to greening the city for the last 26 years.

Orticola’s Theme for the 2023 Flower Show

“The plant world that seems so peaceful to us, where everything appears acceptance, silence, obedience, is on the contrary the place where revolt against fate is the most vehement and the most obstinate.” — This sentence is from “The Intelligence of Flowers,” a 1907 book by Maurice Maeterlinck, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature four years later, but it was already present long before in the thinking of Linnaeus and Charles Darwin.

And the intelligence of flowers is the theme of Orticola 2023.

The first thing that strikes us is the beauty of the flower, but flowers are not just ornament, they are the reproductive organ of many plants that are able to attract pollinating insects and guide them, such as Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) that has evolved to avoid self-pollination or Dactylorhiza incarnata that attracts the insect and manages to make it deposit pollen in exactly the right place! Plants and flowers are therefore intelligent, able to adapt, to grow, to multiply.

Orticola 2023 invites you to visit the exhibition with “new eyes,” trying to grasp for each plant its strategies, its techniques, its ways of nurturing, because beauty is ephemeral, while of intelligence one never tires of it, and this will help all of us to have more respect for nature!
